Join us for a guided discussion on this book by early Christian historian Bart Ehrman that weaves a rigorously-researched answer to the question, “How did a religion whose first believers were twenty or so illiterate day laborers in a remote part of the empire became the official religion of Rome, converting some thirty million people in just four centuries?”
The book shows, through a readable narrative, how a handful of charismatic characters used a brilliant social strategy and an irresistible message to win over hearts and minds one at a time. This humane, thoughtful and intelligent book upends the way we think about the single most important cultural transformation our world has ever seen—one that revolutionized art, music, literature, philosophy, ethics, economics, and law.
For those of you who’ve attended Pastor Johnson’s Adult Bible Forum: Paganism, this text will be familiar to you. Pastor’s discussion on world religions aims to cultivate respect for people from a wide variety of religious backgrounds, gain a greater appreciation for the uniqueness of Christianity, and develop skills to help us winsomely communicate our faith to people around us who are religious but not in the conventional Christian way.
Beginning on Wednesday, March 13, we will meet regularly on Wednesdays during Lent from 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the First Saint Paul’s Lounge. During Lent, we invite you to join us at 6:00 p.m. for a BYO dinner (dessert and coffee are provided) before the 7:00 p.m. Lenten Evening Prayer Service, then stay for the book club until 8:30 p.m.
Books are available at the church beginning Sunday, March 3 ($12 while supplies last), or you can buy a copy of the book online any time. If you have questions, please call Marlo Schulz-Kittl in the church office at 312-642-7172 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
